I have never had a huge interest in working out. It was simply too boring. Maybe a better word is uninspiring. I kept in shape by taking on the outdoors. I would rock climb when I had the chance, hike as often as possible and I was always on the lookout for a new vista point or challenging destination to hike to. As horrible of a swimmer as I am, I would always try to find new swimming holes or beaches with awesome waves to wrestle with. If I could get out into nature with some friends, I was content.
Then one day, my cousin (Coach Rod for those of you who didn’t know) told me about a functional fitness program he was trying. Needless to say, I had almost zero interest. I thought it would be like your typical gym experience. Through sheer persistence, I was finally convinced to try the first day orientation. To keep things simple, I don’t think I have ever had such a great time getting destroyed by a workout.
There was a challenge presented to me. There was a high energy, supportive community around me. Everything I needed to face that challenge and enjoy it was right there in front of me. I had no choice but to try my best.
I gave it everything I had and I haven’t looked back since. This community has helped me reach places both physically and mentally that would I would have been hard pressed to reach on my own. I can honestly say that it has enriched my life and given me a stronger sense of self. With such a positive influence on my life, I feel it is my duty to give back just as much, if not more, to the community that helped give me direction.
My goal is to support this community in our journey towards making a better life.
